The 10% every family sees — and the 90% that actually determines who signs.
Most families think college recruiting looks like a highlight reel: a big tournament, a coach in the stands, an offer on the drive home. That version exists — but it's the exception, not the process.
The reality is quieter, longer, and mostly invisible. What separates athletes who sign from athletes who wait isn't talent. It's what they do the other 90% of the time — when nobody is watching.
The 10% everyone sees
- Tournaments, showcases, and camps
- Highlight film on social media
- Verbal offers announced online
- Signing day photos
The 90% no one talks about
This is where offers are actually built.
- Building a realistic target list of 20–40 schools (reach, fit, likely)
- Researching each program: roster needs, style of play, academics, cost
- Writing personalized coach emails — and following up 2, 3, 4 times
- Tracking every outreach in a spreadsheet so nothing falls through
- Editing film to a coach-friendly 3–4 minutes, refreshed every season
- Keeping grades and test scores strong enough to be admitted anywhere on your list
- Attending the right camps at the right schools — not every camp everywhere
- Learning how athletic aid, equivalency sports, and financial aid actually work
- Preparing questions for calls and visits so you evaluate them back
Myths vs. reality
If I'm good enough, coaches will find me.
Coaches have limited time and budget. They recruit athletes who make it easy — clear film, direct outreach, honest fit.
One big tournament will change everything.
Exposure without evaluation is meaningless. A coach who already knows your name shows up looking for you. Cold exposure rarely converts.
My club coach is handling recruiting.
A great club coach opens doors. They don't walk through them for you. The email, the follow-up, the visit — that's the athlete's job.
